Systèmes élastiques désordonnés / Disordered Elastic Systems : from high Tc superconductors to ferroelectrics
Thierry Giamarchi (univ. Genève)

22 mars 2007

Many microscopically different systems can be described at a macroscopic scale as a disordered elastic system. Examples are the vortex lattice in type II superconductors, charge density wave systems, the contact line of a liquid on a substrate or domain walls in magnetic or ferroelectric materials. In these systems, the competition between elasticity and disorder leads to glassy effects quite analogous to more usual glasses, but with also important differences. Understanding this physics is an enormous challenge, that I will discuss, both from a theoretical point of view, but also with very practicall consequences such as transporting a current without loss, or on the stability in time of a magnetic recording.
